This story is too great not to share as an individual Picture. I didn’t know there were any pictures from this time that existed. (Only people born prior to the Internet understand this--If your friend took a roll of pictures, it may be months later that they actually developed them--In some cases, it was years. If that was the case, there was a very real possibility that pictures of you existed that you had never, actually seen. Let me assure you that it is very cool to see a picture that was not blurry and did not cut off your head or half your body).
If you ever sat through an old school University of Hawaii graduation you know they were three to four hours long. They had to do all the PHD degrees and Masters degrees first (now I believes this is a completely separate ceremony). Once that was done, there was a sea of undergrads in semi-random order. Somehow Mary Holgan and Syd were two of the first batch. After they got off stage they ran to the back, hurdled the barrier, and sprinted through the closed (but not locked) doors.
Mary’s husband and I cheered so loud because we escaped almost two hours early. These two were eating and celebrating, at the (brand new at the time) Hard Rock Cafe. They were in their gowns and leis and people asked if graduation was already over. We were like, “God no… It’s still happening!”
