What To Wear At a Wedding.
Most husbands can relate to this--I was subjected to the entire closet as Syd packed to go home for (one of many) summer weddings in Washington State. There is a series of questions for which there is no good answer: "Do I look too big in this? Is this too short (or tight)? Is this not short enough (or tight enough)? I finally got her all set and she had selected two perfect dresses.
Sure enough, a day into the trip I got a call. She was going dress shopping. Mind you, I had a very small section of my closet for my clothes. She had 2/3 of a closet plus the guest room closet. Still, she began laying the groundwork for her case with:"Nothing I have is really suitable for a wedding."
Those of you who know us well, know that Syd was the primary financial person for our household. She did not need to ask my permission (and rarely did)--She once bought a car without telling me. Sailing is an amazing past time but Syd's multiple careers paid the bills. Still, I felt I would be negligent in letting an opportunity slide.
"You are telling me you have nothing to wear to a wedding?", I began.
"Yes", she countered (falling into my trap).
"Are you forgetting that the wedding is taking place at your parent's house and that that is the site of our mainland wedding reception?" Are you also forgetting that you brought your wedding dress home with you so the Washington relatives and friends, who were not able to come to Hawaii, would be able to see you in your dress." I continued,"You literally have a wedding dress you could wear."
She laughed but at sparked an idea.
The day of the wedding, my very thoroughly detail oriented brother in law (Syd's Step Brother) was out on the lawn helping to set up chairs prior to changing. Syd came marching out in her wedding dress yelling, "Jon, I am ready for our big day."
Evidently, she and Jon had always had a running joke that if they got married, it would completely screw up the family tree.
It did not stop there. After Syd was done, her sister Lisa came out in the dress to scare her dad (I think Lisa was still a teenager at the time). A few moments later, Syd's mom, Carolyn came out in the same dress. Best second life of a wedding dress ever.
(By the way. Syd had in fact bought a new dress and was...of course... A total smoke show). The best part is that I found some of those pictures. I can't find her mom in the dress but I have almost everything else.
The first two pics are Syd surprising Jon on the day of his wedding. The third is her actual dress (I told you it was good). The remaining ones are a separate event with her and her sister in their dresses. I can’t find the pic of her mom in the dress but she is laughing hysterically.
